Zig-Zag Tote Zakka Style

In my list of resolutions this year, I had a goal to better utilize my book stash. I made another project out of Rashida's Zakka Style book. You can see more of them under my 52 projects tab.

Zig-Zag Tote from 'Zakka Style'

I decided I wanted to use Anna Maria Horner's Innocent Crush and Amanda Jean's zig-zag style using rectangles. The effect is a a zig-zag of scrappiness.

Modfied rectangle zig zag pattern

The front and back have an irregular quilting pattern echoing the zig-zags. I made a slightly larger pocket of additional Innocent Crush to accommodate my cell phone and wallet. I see some books going into this bag during our weekly Saturday trips to the public library.

I used only batting for the body of the tote, what was on hand, and added batting and light Pellon interfacing to the handle. I was not unhappy about the results. Most measurements are the same as the book.

If anyone is wondering, the linen used is Essex linen in natural. There is a 55/45 ratio of cotton to linen which makes it soft and unwrinkled out of the dryer. A quick press with steam and it is ready to use for your project. It also seems to be a good match to Far Far Away 2 and 3.

False Start

I was going to cut into the Flea Market Fancy that arrived Friday, but sadly spent the night with an allergic reaction to fabric softener. After years of using non-perfume laden products, I thought the kids were old enough not to be sensitive. Of course I was instead. I am playing Russian roulette with each piece of clothing I am wearing and was able to remember most of what I put into the dryer last weekend and rewash it. I took two Benydral and I was out. Yeah Friday night!

Essex linen in natural and Innocent Crush

Today I did some math and worked on this. I should have a cute bag to share by Monday.

I think the FMF is just going to have to intimidate me for a while longer. That's OK. It is just pretty to look at.

Name that Block!

While I finished 5 more blocks for the Granny Square blocks, I cut even more squares for a scrappy border. I need to find the perfect length and width for a twin bed. It's not to late to join the quilt along at flickr.

Granny Progress

I may have more fun playing with scrappy fabric combinations than sewing the blocks. I've also taken to naming them.

Tonight is the Friday Night Sew In and I will be cutting into a package of Flea Market Fancy. I have waited what seems like eons to say that! It does vary from the original in very tiny aspects, but I am thoroughly pleased with it. I wish there was a reprint of all the colors to squash the crazy prices on ebay and esty. Maybe there will be another reprint set based on sales? A girl can wish.

Ignore the pins in the Steel Bluegrass Granny, a seam needs to be fixed there. However those silk pins are wonderful. I bought them on sale at Pink Chalk Fabrics here. It's hard to find pins that thin and don't leave marks. I have no excuse now and need to throw away all my bent pins.

I am going to enjoy my time today visiting Amy, Sarah, and Amanda Jean this week and finding what other finishes are out there. Maybe one day I'll have a quilt instead of just blocks.

The Best Iron- Does It Exist?

My iron didn't turn on today. It lasted about a year and a half. Rowenta, Oliso, and Panasonic are only a few brands that I am looking at today. I am looking at the pricier options, but sometimes I wish you could test drive an iron.

Do you have a favorite iron?  I am leaning towards one with a large water tank and higher wattage than the one I have owned. Any opinions on cordless irons? I might go shopping today at Costco and get one to hold me over.

What are your experiences? Thanks for your opinion!
